Official Selection at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.
Melbourne, Australia. One of the oldest cities on earth. A place famous for its coffee, culture and climate. Four seasons in a day, that’s what the locals will tell you. And the most liveable city in the world… whatever that means.
The sequel to London: A Guide for the Naive takes you around Australia’s capital of culture, explaining its history, people, and idiosyncrasies.
Did you know that dinosaurs existed in Australia right up until 1905? Or that Melbourne was named after cultural icon Mel Gibson?
You do now.
A film about guilt, regret and the wrong change. One man’s momentary fortune becomes his lasting torment. This film was made for the Virgin Media Shorts competition 2012. It was inspired by a real life incident which made me question why anyone might possibly have reason to try to return money they had been given in error almost 6 months before.
Two for one special! Anyone want some lunch? Come on, someone must be hungry. A second film which we made for Virgin Media Shorts 2012 at the last minute. We had the idea one evening, arranged filming for the next day, and edited it the next. We luckily managed to blag the use of a restaurant in Covent Garden.
It can be pretty lonely at the top. People just seem to look at you differently when you’re the boss. A film made for the Reed competition 2012 which focussed on the theme of ‘The Boss’. The film turned out pretty much exactly as we had pictured it – offering a tender look at it’s main character – and made the long list of 50 films from 500. The challenge we faced was making sure it wasn’t too similar to something out of The Office, which I think we achieved. Originally we were looking for some melancholic and tragic music, but landed on this upbeat and jolly track which just seemed to set the film off so well, and gave emphasis to the boss’ hopeful insistence of seeing the world a certain way.
Ever wondered where the idea of ‘time’ came from? Ever stopped to consider a world before clocks, timetables and structure? Can you imagine a world where lateness was an unknown concept? After watching this film you may think twice the next time someone casually asks ‘What is the time?’ We made this film for the Sundance London competition 2012 in which we reached the final and received special mention. It was an evolution of a style we first used in London: A Guide for the Naive – only we set out to experiment in making this one even more straight-faced. I would say at least 60% of the people who have commented on it, thought it was actually a documentary.
Are you feeling lost? Reeling from the incessant instructions to ‘stand to the right’ and ‘mind the gap’? Wondering how to get by in a city that seems to hate you? Then follow Vincent Mahoney as he takes you on a journey, showing you the what’s what, the where’s where, the who’s who and the when’s which of London. The first film we made which turned out to be a monumentally ambitious first project. With a total cast of about 30 people, and filmed across roughly 30 different locations, it was a hell of a lot of work. It was great fun to make though, including all the many different props, and will soon be followed up by a sequel offering a guide to Melbourne. The Wrong Change
